Mason Greenwood is from the England U21 squad but can he be a routine at the Manchester United? That’s the view of team-mates and former coaches who talk of a rare talent who’s capable of producing it writes Adam Bate.
Marcus Rashford calls him frightening. Luke Shaw calls him incredible. Older players praise his mindset and his adulthood. Supporters liken him to Robin van Persie. There’s a space that is opened up to emerge Since the flops depart Manchester United and teenager Mason Greenwood matches the profile perfectly.
The academy graduate to signify United is somewhat special. You will find glimpses of that in his short cameo at Southampton. Greenwood might have won a punishment had the noodle seen the kick that was accidental that he received from Stuart Armstrong on and forced a great save from Angus Gunn after showcasing a few of his stepovers.
A spot is not likely to be far away for a player who scored over a goal a game for the U18 and U23 sides of United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has trusted Greenwood off the seat that memorable March night in Paris and awarded him his own complete Premier League introduction on the final day of last year when he described him as the group’s”best player by a mile”.
But it was that Greenwood really convinced Solskjaer he was prepared. A goal against Leeds helps but there was more than that. There was the time he flipped out on the Perth Glory defence inside and twisted. There was his goal against Inter, while his drag-back in that match made a fool.
There is a particular irony that the team which has accepted on Alexis Sanchez along with Romelu Lukaku was impressed contrary to by Greenwood. They’re United’s last. Only 17, Greenwood is your long run. Maybe even the present. That’s how it is seen by Solskjaer. “Mason’s pathway could have been a lot harder when we had another ahead ,” he said recently.
It seems sure that Greenwood may get his opportunity. The big issue is when he gets it how good he will become. What sets him apart from the rest and will he fit to the United team? Neil Dewsnip has been Greenwood’s trainer with the England U18 squad this past year and that he sees him as someone with talent and the mindset to be successful.
“He is highly encouraged to be the best that he can possibly be that is almost always a huge strength in a young player,” Dewsnip informs Sky Sports.
“From the England U18 team he played an out-and-out centre-forward right down the middle and did very well in that job but we used him in broad areas as well, particularly on the ideal side of the field where he could cut in on his left foot and belt it quite nicely.
“He has definitely got an eye for goal, therefore I would agree with his supervisor that he can evaluate a variety of goals. He may put in behind defences and is quite fast, direct. He is also clever enough to combine with his team-mates. So he has an intriguing package developing.”
If there’s no club like United but will he be in a position to put that package together at a bar like United? Can a player who needed to return to college the day after playing his part over Paris Saint-Germain cope with all the pressure of having to provide at the greatest club in the world? Will he really be able to handle all that?
“I believe he can,” adds Dewsnip. “Front players tend to bring that with them. They love to score goals. They’re excited by that. I really don’t believe Old Trafford will fazes him. I think it will be relished by him. The audience has already started to develop a comprehension concerning him. It remains to be seen if he could deliver but I don’t think he will be fazed by it.”
Speaking to one of the colleagues, it appears Greenwood does not have any reason. Where the walls are adorned by pictures of graduates, Luke Shaw admits once the name of Greenwood is mentioned. The left-back has faced him in training. He knows what’s currently anticipating Premier League defences.
“He is a really awesome player, an incredible talent and it’s crazy to think that he is only 17,” Shaw tells Sky Sports. “There’s much more to come out of him but there is so much he’s doing right now. He’s impressing each time he performs and each time he trains he wants to understand. Ole has massive beliefs in him and so do the rest of us”
The two Lingard and Rashford have predicted Greenwood and there is a calmness to his match. He is viewed by both as a finisher – that the most thing he could do it with the two feet taking fines with his right foot that was supposedly weaker. He played at a deeper role in his younger days but had been moved forward due to his capability.
Much more than a poacher, he is a dribbler too with great speed – that his sister is about a sports scholarship at Manchester Metropolitan University. Greenwood has all-natural gifts, blessed with power as well as speed and skill. As a teenager, he’s got the upper body strength to hold his marker and switch the play by hitting sweeping cross-field passes.
Manchester United prefer to keep a lid on these things restricting his press actions given his age. However, the key is out. The United fans know it along with his United team-mates know it . “We all know what he will be bringing to this group very soon,” adds Shaw. “He just has to keep his head down and work hard and his talent will prosper.
“He can be among the best on the planet.”
It is a few closeness for United and high praise as their biggest rivals continue to outperform them. The impulse over the last six seasons has been to devote their way back but is a recognition that, even for a part of their tools, this is hopeless. There needs to be a program. They will need to build. And it’ll take some time.
They need to rely upon an academy grad or two as they have. Scott McTominay proceeds to develop, embodying the soul of hard work that each supporter wants to determine from their players. But Greenwood has the power to offer and more to that. He’s a player with that bit of dream to his or her game. A player who can make United believe again.
“This group has energy, it has got childhood,” explained Gary Neville on a recent appearance on Monday Night Football. “I like it. It is not slow, but it’s not methodical, but it is not dull. With a few additions that were decent, they’ve a great probability of doing something if it develops. It’s not going to occur overnight but I’m happier with that which United are”
The Manchester United supporters will be happier when Greenwood gets a run in the group. They may not have to wait long.
